WHAT IS SHORT TERM SUPPORTIVE THERAPY?
Short-Term Supportive Therapy is a type of therapy intended to support the individual in functioning better through periods of adjustment or transition. The client's interpersonal invitation is to receiving support and care for him or herself in order to expand the capacity to respond to external events in life or current challenges. Often the client identifies a particular objective or set of issue that determines the focus of the therapy. Specific outcomes may also be identified. In working towards these outcomes the individual is given the opportunity to explore and process the events and circumstances that have led to the therapy and to expand the inner space for choosing responses.
This kind of therapy can also provide a longer term supportive therapeutic relationship to assist individuals to cope better with dealing with life circumstances that cannot be changed such as terminal illness, disability or bereavement.
