GROUP THERAPY
Group Therapy is a powerful type of psychotherapy which involves a therapist-as-facilitator and several group members. The value of Group Therapy lies in key therapeutic principles that underlie the working of the group. These include the instillation of hope, a sense of belonging, a corrective experience of a primary family group, a re-skilling of socialisation techniques and a place to learn or risk new social behaviours, as well as the opportunity to receive uncommon feedback.
In South Africa, Group Therapy is vastly underutilized therapeutic tool. We are used to hearing about it in conjunction with support groups in inpatient facilities or for typically in conjunction with addictions but the idea of Group Psychotherapy for its own sake is not prevalent. Yet, not only is it a powerful, challenging and exciting form of therapy, whose benefits are documented by extensive research, but it is also cost effective. Whether you are an individual who might be interested in psychotherapy but cannot afford the fees, or you are already in therapy but would like to expand that experience, or you are particularly drawn to the idea of a group experience, this is another way to engage in the therapeutic process.
Each group can consist of up to twelve members who contract for the duration of the group's life. Sessions are 120 minutes minutes and are held weekly. Group composition is carefully managed through the assessment process.
Any individual who wishes to work on personal growth in an inter-personal context is welcome to inquire. The prerequisites is the willingness to commit to the process for personal and collective benefit.
